Standing up for Canada, for democracy, and for the health and wellbeing of PEI's communities.

I will always be free to independently represent the voice of Islanders, to the House of Commons, because my party does not whip votes. Unlike a major-party MP, I will be able to hold thoughtfully the government to account, and give them a push when they need to do better.

I want to hear your priorities and concerns this election campaign.

Anna Keenan's journey spans 15 years of international climate action and democracy advocacy, followed by two years as a municipal public servant—a path that has shaped her into a pragmatic, globally informed candidate, with one foot in science and another in public service.Ā

Anna isn't interested in political spin. Holding degrees in physics and economics, she's driven by evidence and committed to policy that works for local communities.

Her search for global best practices, beyond what can often be a limited debate within Canada and the U.S., sets her apart from conventional political thinking.

Anna and her husband Robert, a local small-business owner in craft brewing, live with their energetic 9-year-old boy in a rural farmhouse they’ve renovated DIY. Together, the family are all-season outdoor sports enthusiasts, frequenting Brookvale Provincial Park. Anna can occasionally be spotted stilt-walking in the Island’s Gold Cup and Saucer and Pride parades, or the River Clyde Pageant.

These are the priorities that Anna has heard from our community. If your issues are not represented here, contact Anna to share your thoughts, so she can amplify your voice.
Protect Canada AND the Climate

Protect Canada AND the Climate

The Green Party has released a strong position paper on Protecting Canada, see link below.

Anna wishes to highlight the following priorities:

Creating a strong diplomatic, economic and security front with other like-minded democracies, independent of the US.

Continue to build relationships with leaders in the US who are resisting the Trump administration, to keep open the possibility of renewed trade relationships in a post-Trump era.

We must acknolwedge the deep oil & gas industry fudning of both Canadian Conservative AND US Republican propaganda. Science demands that we stand firm on meeting our climate responsibilties, which require phasing out fossil fuels over 2 decades if we are to give our kids' generation a fighting chance.

Strengthen Canadian-owned supply chains, including local value-added processing for PEI's primary products, agriculture & fisheries. Establish national strategic reserves of key commodities to ensure producers always have a buyer, even through market fluctuations and trade shocks.

Withdraw from the 'Safe Third Country Agreement' with the US and prepare to expand Canada's refugee provisions to include politically-targeted US professionals.

We are all doing what we can to buy Canadian and avoid US products at the grocery store. Canada must cancel the $80 billion F35 fighter jet acquisition from the US (that's $2000 value per Canadian, paid to Lockheed Martin), and secure military production withĀ  European allies.

Fix the Housing Market

Fix the Housing Market

Anna's primary housing priority is to tackle housing affordability through bold, evidence-based public investment, drawing inspiration from successful post-WWII federal housing investments, and looking at examples of housing policy excellence around the world, for example Vienna and the Netherlands.

Housing experts in Europe recommended aiming for one-third of homes being deeply affordable non-market housing, one-third being rentals with regulations that protect renter rights, and one-third for home ownership. The balance is out of whack in Canada and it drives up prices for everyone. The federal government has an important role to play - we need to double Canada's social housing stock, to catch up to the standards of other G7 nations.

Other priorities include:

  • extending HST relief to non-profit builders, like Habitat for Humanity.
  • Pushing to end tax exemptions for corporate investors (REITs), which the Parliamentary Budget Office confirms could generate up to $670 million for affordable housing
  • Reforming affordable housing criteria, to ensure federal dollars create truly affordable units, recognizing that 'below average' rents are still unaffordable for many.
  • Supporting federal backing for 'gentle density' projects like fourplexes and expanding eligibility of funding streams.

Defend democracy & human rights

Defend democracy & human rights

As the US backslides into autocracy, we need to defend democracy and human rights in Canada and abroad.

Domestically this includes proportional representation; fighting misinformation and propaganda; championing diversity, inclusion and nonviolence; defending the CBC and local journalism; and maintaining a professional, nonpartisan civil service.

Internationally, we must strengthen Canadian diplomacy and peaceful protective forces, to enable us to push back against apartheid, genocide, and imperial wars of aggression, wherever they occur. Anna has endorsed the Vote Palestine platform at VotePalestine.ca

Anna is a believer in nonviolent resolution to conflicts, both local and international. We must not blindly follow the US into war, but use strategic and independent discernment. With current US leadership, alternatives to the NATO alliance must be reassessed.

The role of the Canadian and allied militaries must always be a principled, restrained and protective use of force, rather than aggression. We must protect and respect our veterans, both abroad and at home. This includes:

  • firmly addressing sexual violence and other forms of abuse within the military, and holding perpetrators and permissive leaders accountable
  • providing compensation and treatment for harms both physical and mental sustained in the course of service,
  • ensuring that Veterans Affairs offices are well resourced and able to provide support, and that military pensions do not leave veterans in poverty.

Protect Canada's natural heritage

Protect Canada's natural heritage

Canda is defined by our waters, farmland, forests and our climate. Our natural heritage deserves robust protections.

At a time when these protections are under threat, we must act to ensure that proper risk assessments and regulations are in place, so that our children do not pay a long-term cost for short-term development decisions made today.

Anna believes in:

  • Ending public handouts to oil and gas companies. These wealthy companies continue to receive subsidies of between $200 and $1000 per Canadian per year, depending on the year. Greens would invest this money in building the clean energy future instead.
  • Hold big polluters responsible for the climate damage they cause.
  • Creating strict, science-based limits on Canada’s total pollution, and tying federal funding for provinces and municipalities to the results they are able to achieve.
  • Make companies prove they have real plans to deal with climate risks.
  • Protecting nature and biodiversity through strong regulations.

Resolve the healthcare crisis

Resolve the healthcare crisis

In the short term, Anna will champion investing in rapid expansions in family medicine residencies, and push government to more rapidly finish the work already begun on recognizing international qualifications, and Canada-wide medical licencing.

Anna will begin advocacy for long term, changes too, including considering comprehensive reforms to the Canada Health Act, in light of global best practices from countries with the strongest healthcare outcomes.

Anna wants to highlight the importance of implementing Universal Pharmacare, to cover all prescription medication. This would be a significant investment that yields long term savings for the public health system: when people can afford the medication they need to manage their conditions, they don't end up in emergency rooms. Prevention is better - for the patient and for the public purse - than cure.

Fair Taxation

Fair Taxation

Anna and the Green Party support raising the personal tax-free threshold to $40,000. This would save low-and-middle-income workers $3,675 per year, 4-8 times what the two major parties are offering.

We would pay for it by restoring the tax rate for large corporations to 21%, the level it was prior to Stephen Harper's term as PM. Small and medium business taxes would stay at 9%.

Paying tax is a contribution to our nation's collective good. Our services, our infrastructure, our culture and heritage.

We all go through seasons in our life. When we have high incomes, we should be proud to chip in to that common good. And when we are out of luck financially, we should get a break, and extra support.

Changing the tax-free threshold is a small step we can take for working people. For all, the progressive goal north star is a truly universal Basic Income Guarantee.

Other steps we can take in the short term include raising the seniors' Guaranteed Income Supplement, disability benefits, and caregiver benefits, to above the poverty line.Ā

Thank you Malpeque! It’s time for my traditional post-election long debrief post/essay. It’s a 5 min read. :)

🌻There are lots of people to thank. I’ll start with the two fabulous men in the picture: my lovely husband Robert, and my rambunctious son Oscar (posing here with a drill after helping install a road sign!). They’ve always supported my choice to engage in politics, and have cheered me on, in spite of the disruptions and stress that campaigns can add to family life. I’m so grateful to have them by my side, and I’m looking forward to giving them (and our pets! and our garden!) more time and attention now that the campaign is over, and spring is here.

🌻Next, I’d like to thank every volunteer, and donor: whether you doorknocked with me, delivered flyers, drove me around, made phone calls, came out to events, took on sign delivery and installation/teardown, or chipped in some cash to help, thank you. Your support truly kept me going in the very challenging circumstances of this peculiar election. Because of your solidarity, I had the energy to keep showing up and giving my best in debates, in media interviews, and at the doorsteps, championing our shared vision of a free people in fair societies, and a balanced economy on a healthy planet, all brought to you by deep democracy. Particularly deep thanks is due to Susan, Andrew, Martin, Mark, Mille, Cameron, Irene, and Isaac.

To the 1,049 people who voted for me: thank you for ā€˜being brave’, even when there was such pressure to limit your choices to being only between the ā€˜big two’ parties. I don’t want to see us become more like the US, with only a limited scope of political debate, and I’m glad that you’re with me on that!

(Post-election thoughts continued in comments)ā€œWe are proud to endorse our friend Anna Keenan as the Green Party of Canada’s candidate for Malpeque. Anna is a bold, principled, and deeply capable candidate —one who embodies the values and vision of the Green movement.

As a climate advocate and community builder, Anna brings unmatched experience to the table. She understands the urgency of our time—on climate action, on affordability, and on protecting the integrity of our democratic institutions. Her commitment to evidence-based policy, social justice, and sustainable economic development makes her the clear choice for voters in Malpeque who want a representative that will fight for their future, not for political gain.

Anna has already proven her dedication through years of grassroots work and advocacy. She knows this community, listens to its people, and is not afraid to speak truth to power. As Green co-leaders, we know that Anna Keenan in Parliament would be a powerful voice for change—one rooted in compassion, integrity, and a hopeful vision for generations to come.

We encourage the people of Malpeque to elect Anna Keenan and help build a more just, resilient, and sustainable Canada.ā€

—

Congratulations to the Carrefour and the SociĆ©tĆ© Nationale de l’Acadie for today’s announcement.

Gold Cup parade theme for this year, coinciding with Acadian Day: Vive l’Acadie!

The parade will be followed by a full day of festivities featuring Acadian musicians and artists from the 4 Atlantic provinces and Louisiana! Acadia Day will take place on 15 August, and it's going to be a party! I can't wait to take part in the parade on stilts again.

Cultural and linguistic diversity, and bilingualism, bring a lot to our province and our country. I will always support, protect and celebrate all aspects of our diverse cultural heritage. It’s Earth Day. April 22.

This election, the two major parties seem to want to have their climate action cake and eat some pipelines too. It doesn’t make sense. It’s wishful thinking. It won’t protect us.

We have such a precious planet. We must protect it so our kids can be safe in their future home. The best way to do that is to reduce emissions in line with what science recommends: phasing out the mass combustion of fossil fuels over the next 25 years.

Here on PEI, our major industries are firmly rooted in the land and water. We rely on a stable climate.

In Canada, we have the worst climate performance in the G7.

We ignored the expert warnings 10 years ago, that we were heading into a deep shortage of healthcare staff. We ignored the warnings in the housing sector. In both cases we ended up in a crisis. Let’s not do the same on the global, existential threat of climate change.

If you want representatives who understand climate science and will champion bold action to protect our kids’ future… there’s only one candidate in this riding who will come out swinging, and say what needs to be said on this issue. If you want change, vote for it.Change is possible, but you have to vote for it.

Check out the Green platform. These are the ideas we need to strengthen our local community here on PEI, and drive our country forward.

The Greens have always served as the "policy vanguard" in Canadian politics. We supported marriage equality, universal pharmacare, affordable childcare, climate action and more for *literally decades* before these policies were adopted by the major parties.

It's because we base our policies on evidence.

Old-style politics ignores warning signs, waits for crises to arrive, then scrambles to react. Greens look ahead and prevent crises from occurring in the first place. That's sustainability.

"This platform is not about playing it safe. It’s your invitation to stop settling — for less, for later, for leaders who always seem to find a reason not to act."

"If you want housing you can afford — Vote For It
If you want health care that will always be there when you need it — Vote For It
If you want fair taxes and a Guaranteed Livable Income — Vote For It
If you want free tuition, food security, and abundant clean energy — Vote For It
If you want change, with courage, clarity, and action — Vote For It"

https://www.greenparty.ca/our-planOn electoral reform, our community has expressed their opinion very clearly. Twice. Our local MP should represent our community. Our 4 Island MPs should represent the diversity of our Island. The House of Commons should represent Canada accurately.

Electoral reform was promised and then not delivered, both locally and nationally. Voting 'strategically' for parties that won't reform the electoral system keeps us stuck that exact same broken system that forces us to vote strategically to keep one of two parties in power, like in the US. And Canada struggles to move forward.

If you want change, vote for it!Love #PEIOn housing affordability and neoliberal economics.

This is just one of many evidence-based housing policies we champion to address the current housing crisis and achieve long-term sustainability in the housing market.

If you want a community champion who can drive change and truly hold government to account, vote for it.ā€œIf elected, I will dedicate myself to serving Islanders. I will listen, I will follow the evidence, and balance the freedom of the individual with the need to work as a community and care for one another. I will work for a diverse and tolerant society that respects the dignity of the person and the rights of everyone.ā€
 — Josh Underhay (1984-2019)

It’s been 6 years today. I don’t think I was one of Josh’s best friends, but he was one of mine. I think that’s a common experience for hundreds of people - friends, colleagues and students - who had the pleasure of knowing him. A giant, loving heart.

He was everyone’s ally and supporter. I first connected with him through the proportional representation campaign, then through Green politics, jazz music, and active transportation. Our kiddos played together.

Every single day, in every campaign I’ve run in, I’ve worn this wristband that one of his students gave me after he and Oliver passed. It says simply, ā€œMake The World A Little Bit Better.ā€

If we could all do that every day, and lead with love, truth and courage like Josh, Oliver and their family, what a wonderful world this would be.

Heading out on Rustico doorsteps this morning, to try to do just that.

Miss you bud. šŸ’š 🚲 🚲 šŸŽ¶
